FAQ - ARE YOU OFFERING TO WRITE MY ESSAY?

No. I do not write student essays. Rather, I coach students to write essays they are proud to include with their college and university applications, and which help differentiate them from other applicants.

FAQ - WHAT IS THE PROCESS LIKE?

I offer two different services:

Quick Response is designed as a one-time essay critique. Fill out and submit this form. You’ll receive instructions on how to send me your essay and pay the fee. Once I receive your essay and payment, I’ll read your work and provide a one-page critique within 48 hours.

When you hire me as your essay coach, I guide you through the process of writing your college-admission essays, from brainstorming and conception to the final, polished products--powerful and unforgetable narratives that only you can write. We work at your pace. As your essay coach, I'm available to you throughout the application season for questions, video chats, and encouragement. My goal is to help you, the student, produce distinctive and memorable essays that distinguish your college applications.

FAQ - WHAT IF I DON'T KNOW WHAT I WANT TO WRITE ABOUT?

No worries! Many students don’t. But after living 16, 17, 18 years on this planet, you have a story, an opinion, a viewpoint worth telling. The challenge is in choosing the best story, opinion, and/or viewpoint for your college essay, and writing it so that it has maximum impact for the reader. As your essay coach, I'm here to help you do exactly this.

FAQ - WHY SHOULD I HIRE YOU TO COACH ME ON WRITING MY COLLEGE ADMISSION ESSAY?

I demystify the process of writing your college-admission essays, including your Common Application and supplemental essays. I teach you how to leverage your unique vision and life experiences to write an essay that distinguishes your application. And I help you understand how to target the schools of your choice. I work with a limited number of students each year, which means I'm available to you throughout the application season for brainstorming, questions, video chats, and encouragement. I’ve been a professional, working writer for 23 years, specializing in essays and creative nonfiction. I’m the author of seven books, including two collections of essays and a volume of immersion reporting. My work has appeared in such publications as Notre Dame Magazine, The Saturday Evening Post, Southwest Review, Christian Science Monitor, and The Atlantic as well as anthologies such as Flash Nonfiction Food (2020), Battle Runes: Writings on War (2011), and Illinois River Survey (2011). Additionally, my work has been nominated for the Pushcart Prize and cited in The Best American Essays and The Best American Sports Writing. I earned a bachelor’s degree in English from the University of Oklahoma and an MFA degree in creative writing from the University of Central Oklahoma. I’ve taught nonfiction writing at the University of Oklahoma, the University of Central Oklahoma, and in Oklahoma City University’s graduate program in creative writing.
